Pre-Order Strategy
When pre-ordering LEGO actually makes sense.
- D2C exclusives sell out. Big Direct-to-Consumer sets (UCS Star Wars, large modulars, Marvel D2Cs) routinely hit "out of stock" on launch day and take weeks to restock. Pre-order is the safest path.
- Insiders early access = cleaner stock. The LEGO Insiders (formerly VIP) early-access window is usually 1-2 weeks before public release. Stock is fresh, no scalping yet.
- Watch for double-VIP weeks. If you can wait 30-60 days post-launch, double-VIP events stack a meaningful 5-7% effective discount on full-price sets.
- Skip the pre-order hype on small sets. Anything under $50 will be in stock for years. Pre-ordering ties up your money for nothing.
- Aftermarket pre-order pricing is rarely worth it. Resellers will mark up by 50-100% before street date. If you missed the window, just wait for restock.
