Hey everyone, it’s Tanner. The LEGO Batman Movie Arkham Asylum (set 70912) is the LEGO build that gave Batman fans the most complete villain roster ever shipped in a single set — and as of 2019 it’s officially retired, which means the secondary market is now where you go to chase one.

What Makes This Set Special

Arkham Asylum is Gotham City’s mental institution for the criminally insane — the building where most of Batman’s rogues’ gallery serves time between heists. The LEGO interpretation captures every iconic feature:

  • Multi-level building with lifting floors for interior access
  • 12 themed cells, each containing a specific villain in their iconic appearance
  • Asylum exterior with the iconic gothic architecture
  • Guard tower and main entrance
  • Iconic Arkham accessories: straitjackets, padded walls, electroshock chairs

The villain-cell theming is the standout. Each cell is decorated to reflect the personality of its inhabitant — Mr. Freeze’s cell has ice, Poison Ivy’s has plants, Riddler’s has question marks, Two-Face’s is split down the middle. The level of fan service is the highest in any LEGO Batman set ever shipped.

The Build

1,628 pieces, roughly 7 hours across two sessions. Sequenced ground floor first (with the entrance and intake area), then each upper floor of cells, then the guard tower and exterior detailing last.

The multi-floor mechanism lifts each floor independently for interior access. Display the building closed for the gothic silhouette, or lift floors apart to expose the villain cells. Most builders rotate between configurations.

The 12 Minifigures

The roster is the deepest Batman villain set in any single LEGO release:

  • Joker (with iconic green hair and printed face)
  • The Riddler (with question-mark cane)
  • Two-Face (with the iconic split-coin)
  • Penguin (with monocle and umbrella)
  • Mr. Freeze (with ice gun)
  • Bane (with mask)
  • Scarecrow (with fear-toxin grenade)
  • Catwoman (with whip)
  • Killer Croc
  • Harley Quinn
  • Batman (in the asylum-uniform variant)
  • Commissioner Gordon

12 figures at $13/figure effective price is among the best minifig values for a Batman LEGO set.

Now Retired — Secondary Market Reality

LEGO retired set 70912 in 2019. Aftermarket trajectory:

  • eBay sold (2020): $200 sealed
  • eBay sold (2023): $260 sealed
  • eBay sold (mid-2025): $315 sealed, $245 opened-built

Roughly 210% of MSRP on sealed copies in 8 years — solid retirement appreciation, slower than the Devastator but steady. The driver is the Batman villain demographic, which is broad and includes both LEGO and non-LEGO collectors.

If you’re shopping now: target a built copy in the $230–$260 range. Sealed copies above $315 are speculative.

Display Notes

Footprint: 38cm × 30cm × 35cm tall. Display the asylum closed for the iconic gothic silhouette, or lift the floors apart to expose the villain cells. Display at eye level or slightly below for the asylum-architecture effect.

This set pairs specifically well with the Avengers Tower (76269) as a “good vs. evil” superhero display dichotomy — Marvel heroes on one side, DC villains on the other. The two together create a curated superhero LEGO display that reads as deliberate.

Is It Worth Chasing on the Secondary Market?

If you can find a built copy under $260: yes. The 12-figure roster alone justifies the premium, and the build experience is among the most narratively engaging in the Batman LEGO line.

If you’re paying $315+ sealed: wait. The Arkham Asylum retirement curve has been steady but not explosive — patience pays.
